Past President page] Mike Harrell -- 2008 ![]() What city are you from? New York City What year did you move to Charlotte? In 1995 (went to Davidson) then after graduation, he moved to New Zealand. How did you get started in real estate? He started with McKee Realty and did tenant rep for one and a half years, then he did a deal with Beacon and started working for them. Brief summary of career: With Beacon since 1996 What are you doing today? Partner with Beacon on the office product. He oversees existing portfolio and looks for new investment opportunities. How has the region changed since your presidency? Charlotte saw the “worst case scenario” unfold, which was seeing our two major employers (Bank of America and Wachovia) have major problems. Although, Charlotte has weathered the storm well. These trying times have brought forth a renewed sense of collaboration to recruit jobs among the region’s influential organizations such as CRCBR, NAIOP, Charlotte Chamber and the Center City Partners. When President, what accomplishment where you most proud of? Community Service. The partnership with Classroom Central strengthened that year. What are the 1-2 most important events that happened to CRCBR during your presidency? In addition to Classroom Central, CPE got better and worked really well for members. What is your favorite piece of real estate in Charlotte? The first is Bobcats Arena/Time Warner Cable Arena (because he likes Bobcats basketball) and the second is the Epicentre because it was something missing from our city and is a big driver for Uptown. What is your favorite piece of architecture in Charlotte? The new Duke Energy Center, because his kids like the way it lights up. What is your favorite Charlotte restaurant, now or then? Roosters What deal do you remember that had the most influence on the Charlotte marketplace? All of Ballantyne’s success over the past few years seems to stick out. What is important for members of CRCBR to know about you? He is focused on the education of high poverty children in the region. He said it can almost feel like a second career.
