Roger Cobb -- 2007Roger Cobb, 2007

What city are you from?
Jacksonville, FL

What year did you move to Charlotte?
1972

How did you get started in real estate?
His father was an apartment developer and most of the rest of his family was also in the business. They were all on the commercial side. He did not enjoy being a banker and wanted to switch to something with which he was familiar and knew he would enjoy.

Brief summary of career:
Graduated from UNC in 1988 and moved to Charlotte to work for First Union. He spent 10 years in banking, first as a Consumer Branch Manager and then as a Fixed Income Salesman.  He joined Southern Real Estate in 1998 and has been there since.

What are you doing today?
He is the BIC and Sales Manager from Southern Real Estate. His primary business activities are hiring and business development. Roger is optimistic about the future of the transaction based business.

How has the region changed since your presidency?
The loss of momentum with the faltering of Wachovia and Bank of America along with the tremendous loss of jobs associated with the recession has had the biggest impact on the region.

When President, what accomplishment were you most proud of?
He is most proud of the relationship CRCBR has fostered with Classroom Central and the attention he was able to provide that relationship during his tenure as President. CRCBR transitioned to Karnes for CPE and he kept things moving in the right directions and “didn’t screw it up.”

What are the 1-2 most important events that happened to CRCBR during your presidency?
Everything was “clicking along nicely" and CRCBR hit 1000 members prior to his presidency. During his presidency, they grew membership by an additional 100 members. He became a point of contact for public relations and was able to keep CRCBR in the spotlight by directing press to the proper individuals and companies.

What's your favorite piece of real estate in Charlotte?
4,800 sf. of vacant land adjacent to Bank of America Stadium because the Panthers tried to purchase it for years and he wouldn’t sell. He uses this as an example that sometimes the deal on the table may be the best deal you’re going to get.

What's your favorite piece of architecture in Charlotte?
Bank of America Stadium

What's your favorite Charlotte restaurant, now or then?
Belle Acres

What item would you leave behind to be remembered as Past President? (If they were adding to a time capsule.)
When he stepped down, Mike [Harrell] made a video with pictures of Roger with a bald head but the video screwed up. He would leave those pictures in the capsule.

What deal do you remember that had the most influence on the Charlotte marketplace?
The “frothy” days when everything happened easily

What is important for members of CRCBR to know about you?
This is an important organization for decisions that affect the industry, for networking and for continuing education. He has been and will always be a huge supporter of CRCBR.
