NAR Testimony
on Capitol Hill on
Separation of
Banking and Commerce
NAR President, Thomas M. Stevens, and REALTOR®, Cynthia Shelton, CCIM, 2006
Liaison, Commercial & Business Specialties Group, testified at a hearing
before the House Government Reform Subcommittee on Government Management,
Finance and Accountability. The subcommittee hearing was called to examine
the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency’s decisions to allow national
banks to engage in real estate development, ownership and merchant banking.
NAR contends that recent OCC rulings inappropriately expand congressionally
established bank authority and will inevitably lead to an irreparable breach
in the wall separating banking and commerce, and will compromise banks’
ability to act as honest brokers of financial services.
