CDC Looks at Link Between Obesity-Sprawl
Pedestrian-friendly communities combine housing, stores, offices, and
restaurants in a single development in an effort to ease traffic congestion
and improve quality of life, but developers worry about traffic and zoning
laws that make these projects time-consuming and unprofitable.
However, cities may start making development of such communities easier as
evidence mounts that traditional sprawling communities aren't healthy for
residents.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control wants to show how urban sprawl and the
obesity epidemic are linked, which could generate more support and funding
for smart growth projects that promote "active living."
Joel Hirshhorn of the National Governors Association counts nearly 200
walkable neighborhoods already in existence, but it is still too soon to
tell whether residents have abandoned their cars for a more active
lifestyle. Southern Village in
Chapel Hill,
N.C.,
for instance, has sidewalks, a movie theater and schools within walking
distance of the homes, parks, and bike trails; but Active Living by Design
director Rich Killingsworth says many residents chose the neighborhood
simply for its location in the Research Triangle. A more pressing concern,
according to Killingsworth, is making existing neighborhoods more attractive
to pedestrians by installing and widening sidewalks, creating safer
crosswalks, and improving light fixtures.
