Commercial Mortgage Lending Rises
Commercial mortgage lending climbed 35 percent during this year's first
quarter, a poll by the Mortgage Bankers Association of America indicates.
The increase to $18.9 billion in business volume compared to $14 billion in
the comparable three months of 2002 comes at a time when defaults on many of
the most common commercial loans are on the upswing. Fitch Ratings earlier
this month reported that the rate of defaults on commercial mortgage-backed
security (CMBS) loans increased from 1.8 percent two years ago to 2.73
percent in 2002.
MBAA researchers calculated that the amount of CMBS loans issued in the
first three months of this year increased 86 percent from $3.7 billion a
year ago to $6.8 billion.
