War Has Building
Owners on Hyper Alert
With the conflict in Iraq and the global protests over America's policies
regarding the war effort, many U.S. commercial property landlords have
bolstered security measures at their properties, returning to the
no-nonsense approach adopted soon after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11,
2001.
Among the steps that have been taken are the prohibition of personal food
deliveries and stricter admission policies regarding building visitors
without photo ID.
One of terrorists' most common plans of action is to disrupt "business as
usual" in an effort to further harm the economy, according to John Abruzzo,
head of Vulnerability Assessment Group at LZA Technology. He states, "To
counter this form of aggression, businesses and building owners need to have
procedures in place to mitigate business disruption and allow for a rapid
recovery of business operations. There are several basic steps, which should
be implemented to ensure continuity of business."
One of the first steps is to implement an emergency response plan, says
Abruzzo. The only way to truly make a building secure, however, says
Dominick Ripillino of Harvard Protection Services, is to make it a closed,
or secure, building.
